How word counts are calculated
Word counts on Next Chapters are calculated automatically based on the actual text contained in your book’s chapters. Word counts exist to support progress tracking, Speed Writing goals, and general visibility into how much content has been written.
A word is counted based on standard spacing between words in the chapter text. As you add or remove text, the word count updates to reflect the current state of the book. There is no need to manually trigger a count or refresh the page.
Word counts include all chapter content that exists in the book. This applies whether you are writing a new chapter, expanding an existing one, or revising previously written material. Adding words increases the total count. Removing words decreases it.
Word counts are tied to the book, not to individual writing sessions. This means that writing done across multiple days, devices, or chapters all contributes to the same running total. The platform always reflects the current total based on what is actually written.
In Speed Writing books, word counts are used to calculate progress toward the overall goal and to determine daily targets. If edits reduce the total number of words in the book, Speed Writing goals may adjust upward to reflect the remaining work needed.
Drafts and submitted chapters are both included in word count calculations. The system tracks what exists in the book, not whether a chapter has been approved or finalized. This ensures that progress reflects actual writing effort rather than review status.
Word counts do not include worksheet content or freeform notes. Worksheets and notes are reference material and planning tools, not part of the book’s manuscript text, and they are excluded from word count calculations.
In community and private group books, word counts reflect the content of the book itself, not individual contributor totals, unless a specific feature or report explicitly breaks counts down by author.
Word count calculations are designed to be transparent and predictable. If you ever see a change in your word count, it is the result of text being added or removed from chapters.
