How to read chapters of an existing book
Reading chapters on Next Chapters depends on your relationship to the book, how the book is configured, and how you are accessing it. Chapters may appear differently when viewed through the dashboard, a book page, or the Discovery section.
When you open a book directly, the chapter list shows only the chapters you are allowed to see. Draft chapters are never visible to anyone except the author writing them. Only submitted, approved, or published chapters appear in chapter lists, depending on your role and the book’s rules.
When browsing community books through the Discovery section, you can see which chapters have been approved, but you cannot read the full chapter text. Instead, you can view chapter summaries. This allows you to explore books on the platform without granting unlimited reading access.
To read the full text of chapters in a community book, you must check out the book. Checking out a book grants reading access to its approved chapters. Each account is limited in how many community books can be checked out at one time.
This checkout limit exists intentionally. It prevents accounts from being used solely to read books without participating in the platform. Next Chapters is designed around contribution and collaboration, and checkout limits help ensure that community books remain part of an active writing ecosystem rather than a passive reading library.
If you own or manage a book, you can read all submitted or approved chapters in that book, regardless of checkout status. This allows you to review content, leave feedback, and manage the book’s progress.
If you are a contributor to a group or community book, you can read chapters that have been approved and included in the book. Depending on how the book owner has configured visibility, you may also be able to read submitted chapters that are pending review. Draft chapters written by other contributors are never visible.
In personal books, all chapters are visible to the owner at all times, including drafts and submitted chapters. Personal books do not have checkout limits because reading access only affects the author.
To read a chapter you have access to, select it from the chapter list within the book. Chapters appear in their approved order. If a chapter does not appear where you expect it to, it is usually because it has not yet been approved, you have not checked out the book, or your role does not allow access.
Reading access is controlled by chapter status, book type, checkout state, and your role. This ensures unfinished work stays private while approved content remains discoverable without allowing unrestricted reading.
