How autosave works
When you are writing a chapter on Next Chapters, your work is saved automatically in the background through the autosave system. Autosave ensures that changes you make while typing are preserved without requiring you to manually save your work, as long as you remain connected to the internet.
Autosave runs continuously while the chapter editor is open. As you type, edits are sent to the platform and saved to your draft. You do not need to click a save button, and there is no separate action required to trigger autosave. If you pause while writing and then continue, autosave resumes automatically.
Autosave applies only to chapters that are in a draft state or are actively being edited. If you navigate away from the chapter editor, close your browser, or return to the dashboard, autosave stops at the last successfully saved point. When you reopen the chapter, you will see the most recent version that was saved while you were online.
If your internet connection is interrupted while you are writing, autosave may not be able to record new changes. Text entered during a connection loss may be lost. For that reason, it is important to ensure you are connected to the internet when working in the editor, especially during long writing sessions. The platform does not currently cache unsaved edits locally or support offline autosaving.
Autosave does not submit a chapter and does not make it visible to anyone else. It only preserves your work in draft form or, in the case of personal books, preserves edits made to a submitted chapter. Autosave also does not run platform checks such as consistency analysis or character validation. Those checks only occur when a chapter is submitted.
In group and community books, autosave affects only the author currently writing the draft. Other contributors cannot see autosaved drafts, and autosave does not reserve a chapter or block others from working unless the book has been configured to limit simultaneous contributors.
Autosave exists to reduce accidental data loss while writing, but it does not replace submission or review workflows. Saving through autosave keeps your work safe while you write. Submitting a chapter finalizes that version for review, validation, or inclusion in the book, depending on the book type.
