Finishing your first draft

Finishing your first draft on Next Chapters marks the point where drafting is complete and the project transitions into editing and revision. On the platform, this action is labeled Publish, but it does not mean public release or external publication.

When you finish your first draft, the book moves out of active chapter creation. New chapters can no longer be submitted or added, regardless of book type. This is intentional and designed to create a clear boundary between drafting and the next phase of work.

For community books, finishing the first draft also removes the book from the community library. Community books are only visible in the library while they are actively accepting new chapters. Once the first draft is finished, the book is no longer discoverable for submissions, signaling that the collaborative drafting phase has ended.

Publishing a book does not make it publicly available outside the Next Chapters platform. It does not distribute your work to retailers, readers, or publishing services. Instead, it marks a structural transition from writing to editing, review, and preparation for a second draft.

Finishing your first draft does not permanently lock your content. Chapters, plot details, characters, and notes can still be revised as part of editing and future drafts. The publish action exists to stop new chapter creation and to help you focus on refining what has already been written.

For collaborative and community books, publishing does not change ownership, authorship, contributor credits, or prior participation. It simply closes the submission phase and prepares the project for editing and revision.

Only users with permission to manage a book can finish the first draft. Contributors may not see this option unless they are the book owner or manager.

Finishing your first draft is optional, but it provides a clear sense of completion and ensures the platform behaves appropriately as you move from writing into editing and future drafts.
