Creating your first book

Books are the core workspace on Next Chapters. Every writing project you work on lives inside a book, whether you are writing on your own, collaborating with others, or participating in a community project.

When you create a book, you are creating a dedicated space for a single writing project. That space will hold everything related to that project, including its plot information, characters, chapters, tools, and activity history. Each book is completely separate from others, so work done in one book never affects another.

Creating a book does not mean you are immediately publishing anything. A book can remain private, unfinished, or in progress for as long as you need. Many users create books simply to plan ideas, experiment with concepts, or work through early drafts before deciding what comes next.

Depending on your account access, you may be able to create different types of books. Some books are private and only visible to you. Others are designed for collaboration or community participation and follow additional rules around access and publishing. The available options are presented during the book creation process so you can choose the structure that fits your goal.

Once a book is created, you are taken into that book’s workspace. From there, all actions you take apply only to that specific book. Writing chapters, using tools, inviting collaborators, or reviewing feedback all happen within the context of the book you are currently in.

If you are invited to participate in a book created by someone else, you do not need to create your own book to begin writing. You will see that book listed in your dashboard alongside any books you own or manage.

Understanding how books work at this level makes the rest of the platform easier to navigate, since every major feature builds on this structure.
