How to create chapter outlines
Chapter outlines define the structure of your entire book by mapping out each chapter from beginning to end. They are not outlines for a single chapter. Instead, they describe what happens in every chapter across the full story.
To create chapter outlines, open your book and navigate to the chapter outline section. If you are working through the setup checklist, this appears as the Create Your Chapter Outline task. If your checklist is complete, you can access it from the book dashboard.
In this section, you will create a list of chapters in order. For each chapter, you can enter a title and a brief description of what happens. These descriptions act as a roadmap for your story, helping you understand how the plot progresses from one chapter to the next.
Chapter outlines are flexible. You can add new chapters, remove chapters, or update descriptions at any time. As your story evolves, your outline can evolve with it.
In community books and private group books, chapter outlines are especially important. They provide a shared structure that contributors can follow when writing. This helps prevent overlap, contradictions, or gaps in the story. Because multiple writers may rely on the outline, changes should be made carefully once writing is underway.
In personal books, you have full control over the outline and can change it freely without affecting others.
For subscribers, chapter outlines are included in your book’s AI context memory. This means tools like Book Chat and consistency analysis use your outline to understand the flow of your story and provide more relevant suggestions and feedback.
Because the outline represents the structure of your entire book, major changes can affect chapters that have already been written. If you update key parts of the outline after writing has begun, review your chapters or use consistency tools to ensure everything still aligns.
Chapter outlines are not required, but they provide a clear path forward and make it easier to stay organized as your book grows.
